Our Story starts in the UK:
From Humble Beginnings to High-End Audio Passion

“In 1989, I purchased my very first Naim Audio system from a small independent retailer in Southampton called Soundwaves, owned by Craig Hill. (At that time, we weren’t yet a Linn or Naim dealer.) Craig, who co-founded Onix Audio, a rival electronics manufacturer to Naim, had a deep passion for high-quality audio gear, which laid the foundation for my lifelong love of Linn and Naim products.

The system I began with included a Linn Axis Turntable with a Linn Akito Tonearm, a Linn K5 Moving Magnet Cartridge, a Naim Audio NAIT 2 Integrated Amplifier, and Mordaunt-Short MS10 loudspeakers, all connected by Naim NAC A4 speaker cables. It wasn’t long before my system began to grow and evolve. The Linn Axis was replaced by the iconic Linn Sondek LP12, powered by the first Linn Lingo external power supply. The Naim NAIT 2 was upgraded to the Naim NAC 72 pre-amplifier and the NAP 250 power amplifier, paired with a Hi-Cap power supply and placed on Mana Acoustics equipment stands. The Mordaunt-Short MS10s were replaced with Linn Index II speakers, mounted on Linn Kustone stands, and the speaker cables were upgraded to Naim’s NAC A5.”

35 Years of Audio and Music Expertise

Founded in 1989, our journey into the world of audio began in the UK, where we opened two boutique audio stores in the South of England—one in the historic Cathedral city of Winchester and the other just 13 miles away in the bustling port city of Southampton. Back then, the internet and social media didn’t exist, and television offered only four channels. Credit card readers were manual swipe types on triplicate paper, and vinyl records remained the dominant format, with CDs slowly gaining traction as CD player prices began to drop.

Our Winchester Store

Our Winchester store was part of a larger musical instrument shop, and we had the privilege of working with many colorful characters. One of our favorites was the piano tuner—nearly blind but with perfect pitch—who could identify every note in a chord you played. His entertaining personality left a lasting impression. Eventually, we decided to separate our Hi-Fi and music departments, creating Carusos, a store dedicated to high-quality Hi-Fi equipment and classical music CDs. The musical instrument store transformed into The Winchester Piano Company.

Tim Pride, a Lay Clerk at Winchester Cathedral, ran the CD side of the business. Tim was deeply knowledgeable and passionate about classical music. Sadly, Tim is no longer with us, but he remains fondly remembered.

A Rich History with Audio Manufacturers

At British Audio Guys, we take great pride in our long-standing relationships with some of the world’s leading audio manufacturers. Many of these relationships span decades, and we cherish the memories of both the people and the products that have shaped our journey. Over the years, we’ve built lasting friendships with industry legends—many of whom are no longer active in the industry but remain close friends, bound by our shared love of music and exceptional audio.

It’s important to remember that high-end audio isn’t just about the equipment—it’s about connecting with the music. The equipment is simply the means to an end: a richer, more immersive listening experience.

Our Inspiration: The Flat Earth Audio Revolution

“I have fond memories of those days—spending hours in second-hand record stores along Berwick Street in Soho, London, at a time when vinyl records were being replaced by CDs. My evenings were spent enjoying music on my hi-fi system, with no distractions from television, email, or the internet—just pure, uninterrupted listening.

If you want to read more about some of our earliest inspirations, read about the “Flat Earth Audio Revolution”, a sonic movement from the 1970s that still inspires us today.”
